Twenty six members of the Schola spent three wonderful days at the very end of term taking part in a concert and recording with the Gabrieli Consort and Orchestra, conducted by Paul McCreesh. This was the latest of the Gabrieli Roar projects and more than 250 young people were taking part. Music from twentieth century Coronation services was the programme and the boys had wonderful fun singing works such as I Was Glad by Parry and Handel’s Zadok the Priest, as well the spectacular Coronation Te Deum by William Walton. In the Walton the trebles of the Schola, alongside boys from Tiffin Boys Choir, provided the semi-chorus. These same boys also sang some of the semi-chorus music in I Was Glad, adding the unique sound of the treble voice to the wonderful singing of the Gabrieli Consort. The whole event was held in the most spectacular setting of eleventh century Ely Cathedral, one of the very most beautiful of all English Cathedrals. The boys had a wonderful time, working hard at the singing but also finding time to make lots of new friendships with the other youth choirs taking part. It was a wonderful way to end the Schola’s year and we were all very grateful to all involved in the organisation and running of such a superb event, and in particular to Paul McCreesh for having the vision to come up with such a remarkable outreach programme and for having the energy to make it into a reality.
